DITs consultation on Most Favoured Nation (MFN) Tariffs is now open

 DITs consultation on Most Favoured Nation (MFN) Tariffs which is now open. It is the first public consultation (4-weeks) on the UK’s independent tariff policy to apply from the 1st January 2021, and members of the BATF are urged to contribute.

The consultation offers the opportunity to provide:

  • views on changes to the Common External Tariff to create a bespoke UK tariff regime;
  • specific feedback on individual products or commodity codes of importance to them, including on the corresponding tariff rate; and 
  • information on their interactions with MFN tariffs and the importance of tariffs to their sectors.

Government is seeking views on a series of potential amendments that government is considering to the EU’s Common External Tariff. These are:  

  • Simplifying and tailoring the UK Tariff
  • Removing tariffs on key inputs to production
  • Removing tariffs where the UK has zero or limited domestic production

 The consultation will close on 5 March 2020 and an announcement on the UK’s new Global Tariff schedule will follow shortly afterwards.
